Getting around
Kuching and Miri are in Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. Swinburne's campus is in Kuching, the state capital, and Curtin's is in Miri, in the north of the state. Public transport is limited in both cities: most students live in their university's residences and use buses or ride-hailing apps.
Halal food and mosques
Muslims are a smaller share of the population in Sarawak than in Peninsular Malaysia, so not every restaurant is halal. Halal food is still easy to find; look for the official halal logo. Both cities have mosques, including the Kuching City Mosque.
Before you book
Sarawak manages its own immigration controls, and the visa medical screening costs RM 350 there rather than RM 340 in the peninsula. Swinburne's figure of RM 30,000 a year, including accommodation, comes from a 2022 guide, so expect costs to be higher today.
